Are you getting the itch to step onto a mat before the actual high school wrestling season begins? Between October 9th and 10th (11th if necessary), Clovis West High School in Fresno will host the 2009 California World Challenge. This event is part of the California USA Wrestling’s Triple Crown Championship Series and will be open to the Junior, High School Girls, Cadet, School Boy, Novice, Midget, Bantam, and Rookie Divisions. All that is required to compete will be a 2010 USA Wrestling Card that is available online at www.themat.com (click here to be taken to the registration page) and a $26.00 entry fee for registration prior to October 5, 2009 or $36.00 fee for a late registration, which closes on October 8, 2009 at 8pm. As the school year has come underway, we can now start the countdown of the beginning of wrestling season in November. However, just because November is the month when wrestling can officially take place for high school teams, it doesn’t mean that you necessarily need to wait until then to get onto a mat to start refreshing your memory and to shake the cobwebs out of your knee pads and head gear. Wrestling Prep will be holding open mat rooms from late August through the end of September and further dates will be announced as they are released. The best part is that they are FREE! There is no obligation, and no strings attached. These are opportunities provided by Wrestling Prep to help spur growth in the sport and to help wrestlers in the community improve their abilities. Furthermore, some of these open rooms will have CC Fisher in attendance, who brings in a wealth of knowledge on wrestling. Following are the open mat room dates and locations. Continue reading here.

Although the summer is waning, there are still opportunities for Bay Area wrestlers to get more time on the mat to hone their skills before the upcoming 2009-2010 season. San Francisco State University, home of the NCAA Division II Gators, will have open mats on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30pm to 5:00pm over the next three weeks before their school year begins. SFSU is located at 1600 Holloway Avenue in San Francisco.
The Gators are one of the most successful Division II wrestling teams in the nation and are coached by Lars Jensen, who has produced 9 individual NCAA Champions, 50 All-Americans, and led the team to the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1997.
