As the school year has come underway, we can now start the countdown of the beginning of wrestling season in November. However, just because November is the month when wrestling can officially take place for high school teams, it doesn’t mean that you necessarily need to wait until then to get onto a mat to start refreshing your memory and to shake the cobwebs out of your knee pads and head gear. Wrestling Prep will be holding open mat rooms from late August through the end of September and further dates will be announced as they are released. The best part is that they are FREE! There is no obligation, and no strings attached. These are opportunities provided by Wrestling Prep to help spur growth in the sport and to help wrestlers in the community improve their abilities. Furthermore, some of these open rooms will have CC Fisher in attendance, who brings in a wealth of knowledge on wrestling. Following are the open mat room dates and locations. Continue reading here.

Although the summer is waning, there are still opportunities for Bay Area wrestlers to get more time on the mat to hone their skills before the upcoming 2009-2010 season. San Francisco State University, home of the NCAA Division II Gators, will have open mats on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30pm to 5:00pm over the next three weeks before their school year begins. SFSU is located at 1600 Holloway Avenue in San Francisco.
The Gators are one of the most successful Division II wrestling teams in the nation and are coached by Lars Jensen, who has produced 9 individual NCAA Champions, 50 All-Americans, and led the team to the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1997.

While the summer months ensue, more opportunities are available for young and experienced wrestlers alike to improve their skills and learn from a world-class coach and competitor in the Bay Area. There will be four more wrestling camps held at the Kastl Wrestling Ranch in Half Moon Bay, CA run by CC Fisher, one of the top wrestlers in the nation at 66 kg (145 lbs.).
The remaining camp schedules are as follows:
3-Day Camps
July 17,18, & 19
August 7,8, & 9
2-Day Camps
August 1 & 2
August 21 & 22
Furthermore, in addition to working with CC Fisher, and other college wrestlers from around the nation, the camps come at an affordable price that allows wrestlers to come back for multiple weekend learning experiences. While many other camps around the nation are charging more than $1,000.00, this camp comes at an affordable price of only $170.00 for each 3-Day camp session and $120.00 for each 2-Day camp, and the limited spacing provides a welcoming ratio of instructors to camp enrollees. The camp also provides nutritional information and college preparatory courses for those that are considering wrestling in the college ranks. Continue reading here.

The summer months are a pivotal part of the wrestling season. Although this is officially considered the off season for many high school students, there are numerous places to go and exercises that athletes can partake in to keep up with the rest of the competition and to be ready for the upcoming competition season.
The route that many athletes take is attending a summer camp held by collegiate programs. These summer camps, put on by wrestling programs such as Oklahoma State University or the University of Minnesota, vary in length from 1 week, 14 days, to 28 days, and are held throughout the country at college campuses. The shorter ones tend to focus on technique while the longer term camps focus more on intensive conditioning, building mental toughness, and providing technical instruction.
These camps are very helpful in that they provide athletes with goals to accomplish which in turn teaches them to set out to achieve greater levels of success for themselves on the mat and in life. Additionally, it gives wrestlers insight into the training regimen of the highest quality collegiate programs and how training at that level translates into success, and it exposes high school wrestlers to the larger and more competitive array of competition from around the nation.
However, although these camps can prove to be arduous and tiresome, simply attending one of them is not enough to catapult a wrestler’s skills and techniques to the upper echelon of competition. The summer runs from June until August or September, and these camps take up only a mere fraction of this time. In order to keep up with the toughest and most competitive wrestlers in your league, section, or the state, it is pertinent to continue training all summer long and to continue refining skills, and use these camps as a test of how you have developed and grown in the spring and summer months.
Many wrestling clubs are available to provide athletes the opportunity to get better during the summer and provide technical expertise in Freestyle, Greco-Roman, and Folkstyle, all of which help wrestlers dramatically in their official high school competition season. Usually, there is no fee to be a member of a wrestling club and all that is needed is to purchase a USA Wrestling club card. The following is a link to a few clubs in the Bay Area.
